Review of We Got Married Global Edition
This reality show was not a movie nor a drama, but let me tell you that it could have been turned into a drama. I watched this show because Lee Hong Ki was part of it and I’ve always thought he was really funny. Also, cutie Taec Yeon was taking part on it too so I just couldn’t miss it. I loved the show, although once it was over I had some feelings of regret and I took a break from everything Korean for about a week to pull myself together again. Anyways, lets begin with the real deal:
- The Cast was pure perfection. They did an awesome job in picking each person. And I don’t know what kinds of things they took in consideration to pair them up, but, great job director, great job!
- The Characters there weren’t any…or were there? To be completely honest I did felt like they were following some sort of lines…it could be just me but plenty of things did not seem genuine but made up. Regardless of being a reality show sometimes it felt like drama-meets-wanna-be-reality-show. At times it felt like they were just characters in a romantic comedy drama.
- The Storyline/Timeline was definitely lacking. I mean, I feel like the time they spent together was not enough. I’ve watched reality shows before and the timelines are usually longer, 6 months and above. And how long was their timeline? Around 3 months? I do believe that if they had invested more time things would have been better.
Now, lets get into every little detail possible without spoiling it too much since I’m being considerate to those who haven’t watched it yet. I know this show has been going on for a while. However, I never watched any of their previous editions completely. But I expected a lot of comedy and awkwardness from this show. And I got it. This show will have you laughing from the very first moment. And if you don’t know Korean you’ll be glad to know that Taec Yeon does the personal interviews in English. I know some people weren’t happy, but for us English Speakers that’s awesome.
One of the semi-fail I did see was with Taec and Gui Gui. The couples were supposed to have in common the language BUT Gui Gui doesn’t know Korean and she is not fluent in English unlike Taec. So, the start for them wasn’t so smooth. But Taec is such a sweetheart, and he was so determined that things worked out great. Taec and Gui Gui made such cute couple. However, Gui Gui sometimes came off as annoying because of her bubbly personality. A very funny thing was that she adores Nichkhun and every time she would blurt out his name Taec had a funny reaction. They transmit a sense of longing, like there is actually something going on between them.
In the other hand, Hong Ki and Mina were lovely and perfect from the very beginning. Although their first meeting was awkward central it was just too awesome. The language was not an issue since Mina knows Korean. To me, they were the best couple out of the two. But I must complain that they weren’t given enough time on the show. I always felt like Taec and Gui Gui had more time. Anyways, Hong Ki and Mina were the funniest couple, from the “Cutie” song to the piggy rides they were too adorable and hilarious. Just picture this, Mina giving Hong Ki a piggy ride. I don’t know about anyone else, but there is just no way I could ever do that. And oh, their wedding pictures came out awesome! Also the proposal was great (better than Taec’s). You look at their wedding pictures and it just feels so real, all you can see is love. If they were really not acting at all I do believe we have a real couple here.
Regardless of all the love and chemistry things had to end. And both endings were so difficult to watch. I’ll admit it, I cried and sobbed like never before. Gui Gui really had a difficult time and you could see that Taec was smiling the tears away. It was heartbreaking watching that. The end of Mina and Hong Ki wasn’t any easier. The expression on Hong Ki’s face when he realized it was time to say goodbye will remains with me to this day, and also his words “is this some sort of scary movie?”. Sometimes I wish all that frustration I saw in their faces was pure acting because if I think that it was real I can’t help but to feel so sad. I wanted their timeline to be longer but I also realize that the goodbye would have turned out even worst. The ending was too sad for me, that I felt the need to be away from anything Korean for a while to pull myself together and to this day I’m hesitant to ever watching another edition of WGM. However, regardless of the painful and sad ending watching the show it’s worth it because you will tons of laughs out of it!
We Got Married Global Edition: 9/10
(Because the end was too sad)
